Are PC Tablets Like the iPad Computer Cannibalizing PC Sales?

An influential technology analyst says that tablets like the iPad computer are cannibalizing sales of notebooks, with over 30% of buyers reportedly using the devices as notebook replacements. Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore said that strong tablet computer sales would slow PC sales growth to 4% this year, which is down from a previous estimate of 11%. Tablet sales on the other hand, were expected to reach 45 million units, with 70% expected to be sold by Apple.
PC Tablet sales in 2012 are projected to climb to 70 million units, with PC sales increasing by just7%. Whitmore also predicted that Apple's tablet would remain dominant, and easily beat back challenges from competitors. He speculated that iPad challengers would either have to undercut on price, with negative margin implications, or offer a superior product in order to compete.
